Gifts of Securities
Gifts of marketable stocks or mutual fund shares can have an immediate impact on your favorite SMSU program—and also create an immediate income tax deduction for you based on the assets' current value.

Securities:
-
If your stock certificate(s) are held by a bank or a broker
It is important that you notify the SMSU Foundation in advance of making a gift of securities. Without such notice, gifts of stocks may be transferred to the Foundation with the identity of the donor unknown, making proper credit and timely acknowledgement extremely difficult.
Please contact the SMSU Foundation Office on how to complete the transfer of shares. Email foundation@smsu.edu or contact 1-800-260-0970.

If you hold the stock certificate(s) yourself
If you hold the stock certificate(s) yourself, mail it and a completed stock power form, in separate envelopes but on the same day, to:
Southwest Minnesota State University Foundation
1501 State Street
Founders Hall
Marshall, MN 56258We suggest you send the stock certificate by certified mail. Please include your completed contribution form or a note indicating the designation of the gift in one of the envelopes.
If the stock is registered in more than one name, each person must sign the stock power form. Sign only your names as they appear on the stock certificate(s). The SMSU Foundation will complete all of the other information and will guarantee the signature when the stock certificate is being sent for transfer. If you are giving more than one type of stock, send a stock power form for each stock.
Stock power forms are available at most banks or may be printed from this site. If you would like to have one mailed or faxed to you, contact the SMSU Foundation at 507-537-6266, or send us an e-mail.
Mutual Funds
It is possible to make a gift using shares of mutual funds -- if you plan ahead.
The benefits are similar to making a gift of appreciated securities above, but the process generally takes a little longer. You should allow four to six weeks for the transaction to be processed. If you are planning on making a year-end gift we recommend you start the process as early as November.
Please contact the SMSU Foundation Office on how to complete the transfer of mutual fund shares. Email foundation@smsu.edu or contact 1-800-260-0970.
